Nichola was a member of Lanark and Ponyclub, shared editor, author and inspiration of this site.
As a ponyclub member for 12 years, she competed for her club in all equestrian sports including Polo, playing both for her club and Scotland. After completing her standard grades and highers, she worked for three years at Inglesham Polo centre, with talented internationals from all over the world, learning Spanish to be able to converse with the Argentinean Grooms and players. She transferred her interest and determination to racing and following training at the British School of Racing Newmarket; where she was head girl in her course, she settled in Lambourn the heart of racing in Berkshire.
At 1920hrs on Monday evening 30th August, just 30 days after her 19th birthday, Nichola was riding her bicycle out of Neardown Racing Stables Upper Lambourn with friend John, on her way to continue training her own string of former racehorses.

Nichola was struck by a car, suffered extreme injury, and killed out right.
The feeling of loss felt by us her family, those friends, trainers, owners, jockeys and polo players is immense.

As her family we can only thank her for all our yesterdays, the enjoyment of being her friend, being fortunate to see her jump in competitions from Aberdeen to Truro, groom for and play polo with some of the top internationals in the world, and we regret beyond belief, being cheated out of her tomorrows by James Bobbin of London driving his Porsche on a bank holiday, through Upper Lambourn on a family visit.

We thank the Scottish Daily Express, the Scottish Daily Mail, the Racing Post and Radio Clyde for their recognition of Nichola's talents taking time out to print photos and accounts of Nichola's gifts to the Equestrian world, the Racing Welfare Organisation under their president The Princess Royal, for their immediate and continuing support, and the Thames Valley Police for all their assistance in the ongoing enquires.

Nicky at Perth Leading Julia Scott Barret before her game On the rounds at BRS speed at last can't wait to get into a yard © Scotpolo Mac-Wag Group 16th September 2004, saw her funeral and service in Lambourn, Wiltshire where she made so many local and international friends. Followed by a Thanks Giving Service on the evening of the 19th    September 2004 at
Kirk -o'-Shotts Hall Church Lanarkshire

Folk are preferring to make donations in place of flowers so that her work will continue, with the team she had gathered around her for her new place out side Salisbury, and these can be sent for "Nicky's dream" c/o Ainsley Properties, 5 Windsor Road Barry, South Glamorgan.

from mum & dad
We had a daughter so young and fair - with might, energy and all that flair
of youth so keen, ambition great - head fast onward, through life's gate
to be at least, some one in life - prepared and ready, for all life's strife
alas one day, time just ran out - in seconds just, the light went out

2001 On Bonita against Scotland playing for my ponyclub Oh I won the ball ha ha © Scotpolo Mac-Wag Group No more we see, such honest face - No more we see, that poise and grace
On pony cantering, down the field - Bonita pounds, and players yield -
for you my dear, - you take the play - but, no more, there'll be - another day -
no more, there'll be - another day

! Young Player Grade C Umpire status - 2003 !
  • Congratulations to:-
Tim Bromley-Martin, Kirtlinton Polo Club on achieving Grade C umpire Status in 2003.
Nichola MacDonald-Wagstaffe, Inglesham Polo Club granted her Grade C Status aged 16 in 2001.
  • Nichola is probably the youngest player in Scotland to pass the exam and be awarded the HPA
    C Grade Umpire qualification.

  • Lets see more Scottish young players taking this quite stringent exam as it can only improve the standard of play, and young players understanding of the rules.

  • It would do no harm for some of the old lags to update thir umpire knowledge and status by way of exam!!.
  • !! Remember only official Grade C umpires are allowed to officiate at Pony-club Chukkas !!
    Nicky

! 4 Goal Polo at Beaufort Inglesham take on Foxcote - 2003 !
  • In the three girl, one guy, 4 goal competition Inglesham took on Foxcote at 1700hrs on Wednesday 20th August 2003 in an exciting 4 chukka match. The Inglesham team Emma Thomlinson (2), Milli Scott (2), Nichola MacDonald-Wagstaffe (-1) and New Zealander Johnny Coddington (2) Nichola stepping in at the last minute to replace Nicole (-2) who unfortunately suffered a broken arm during a spill from her pony during Chukkas. The 4 chukka match; played at The Beaufort Polo Club, displayed some good polo with some close and exciting play Foxcote ran out the winners 4 goals to 3.
All at Scottish Polo send our best wishes to Nicole and look forward to seeing her back playing soon

! 2003 into 2004 HPA handicap Changes !
Great to see Andrew Drummond-Morray, Ben and Margaret Coward uplifted to -1 and Tim Bromley-Martin lifted to 0 and having achieved a C grade umpire qualification. He joins Pony-club member Nichola MacDonald-Wagstaffe a member of Inglesham Polo Club who was granted her C grade at the age of 16 two years ago. Chris Crawford a previous pony-club player of Hayfield Polo and Riding club achieved his C grade last year and is well on the way to becoming the first Qualified Polo Coach in Scotland. Well done to you all

! Ponyclub Polo Championships - 2003 !
  • Four Scottish pony-clubs enjoyed the competition in the Ponyclub Polo summer tournaments that culminate in the Cowdray weekend. The Orkney team comprised Ben and Margaret Cowan, (Orkney Area1) Raef Anderson, (Buccleuch Hunt Area 19) Andrew Drummond Murray (Strathearn Area 1).
The Lanark & Upperward team included Nichola and Mark MacDonald-Wagstaffe (L&U Area 19) Max Agar (Taunton Vale) Nicholas Clague, (Devon &Somerset). The Orkney team having played together in previous tournaments played well and qualified for Cowdray gaining second in the Rendell 11 competition.
However L&U played some splendid polo and during the three qualifying tournaments at Southam, Cirencester, and Tidworth. As a team they were developing well and their last chukka at Tidworth against Ashton Valley although lost by one goal saw some impressive play. A credit to the team having only met minuets before the first chukka at Southam and more especially since both Nicholas and Max only started playing in May 2003.
Perhaps in future years more pony-clubs will become aware of the fun and riding skills employed in the game and come to enjoy this two week challenge. All you old games competitors why not give it a go if you think you can ride then come and play
