- ! Scottish Polo Junior Championships ! -
We understand the championships were held last weekend and proved to be a washout with players having to be content with playing each other, since there was no opposition. Another example of Scotland falling down led by people with Selves in Mind. At the Scottish polo website we have players ponies Umpires and teams - yet we were not invited to this extravaganza we wonder why may be 'cause we would have won Ooops!!! Can't have that now can we!! We Promote Polo in Scotland - "Scottish Polo Road Show in 2002" Polo for all - No pony not to worry no money does it matter no kit just ask. I have seen millionaires playing polo and they would be best advised to goal judge and others wearing borrowed kit riding and playing like professionals. At Scottish Polo and thelanark that's what we promote. How often have you hear in Scottish Clubs you can play when the fast chukkas have finished and then your on your own 'cause all have gone home. Yet in clubs we have teamed up with in England you are welcome to play with internationals such is their commitment to the game. There are those that give remembering yesterday and those that take because of yesterday.

- ! Equestrian Scotland ! -
  • Another year almost half way through and school holidays almost upon us
  • This year think something new think exercise think horse riding
  • Television and computers are great fun but predictable since someone has programmed the game
  • With an animal you have to create a partnership and make friends with each other sound crazy ??
  • Just think - Horses don't speak people so they can't answer back in word - but in deed that's another tale!
  • Have a happy holiday and summer but why not come and join us in the world of equestrian learning
  • At the thanark Nickys Dream Club -- The Giving of Excellence to those that want to learn
  • - ! Back with a vengeance! -
With the loss of co-editor Nichola it has been difficult to get back on track - but with so many request and good wishes from those that have known us all for many years those we have helped over the years and those that have left messages on the website we are girding our loins and back to the grist of competition with some brilliant riders and assistants. We have formed a new club and a new organisation and will be looking for teams for competition shortly.

    - ! James Bobbin ! -
  • When you sit down to eat your Christmas dinner
  • Think of me laying eight foot down in a chalk grave - no dinner for me
  • No laughter with family and friends - gone for ever thanks to you
  • I lay life-less and cold here in my chalk grave, whilst you carry on - all my dreams gone, taken away
  • Only pain left for all those I left behind

    • ! Where to play Polo this winter - !
    • There are only two venues to play polo indoors in Scotland -
    • Edinburgh Polo Club at Dalmahoy Ratho "Edinburgh Polo Club"
    • Hayfield Riding and Polo club in Aberdeen "Hayfield Riding and Polo Club"
    • Both centres offer tuition to all levels of player and can provide ponies if required
    • If you take up the game we would strongly suggest you take up the challenge at centres like these.
    • Jamie Douglas at Edinburgh a 3 goal player has been coaching for many years and is from a polo family with young Jamie Gilly and Rebecca playing club and University throughout the UK, together with and coaching enthuse university and young folks polo in the South of Scotland.
    • Likewise John Crawford Hayfield Aberdeen, a BHS Instructor, showjumper, and eventer, came to Polo in 1992 but he has taken time out to teach Polo in America, with his son Chris now a professional, both ride coach and enthuse university and young folks polo in the North of Scotland.
    • Scot Polo have developed a booklet giving most of the facts when your starting off called

    • The book was developed to help new entries to polo get the most out of their training sessions, circulated to Ponyclub and BHS and has been given "the thumbs up" by international players, with encouraging feedback.
    • How often do we go courses, knowing nothing; eyes to the sky, and think if only I knew more I would have learned more, and had more fun, especially when most group session coaches assume you know so much.
    • Well this book gives you just that how to play what your pony needs the basic rules and much more and all for only £3.50 including p&p.and written by those that know, have played the game and competed in all equestrian sport including racing.
    • Remember get your self a good coach, a coach that teaches to your level, one that can get on your pony and show you how your pony will take to the game - do not settle for anything less -
after all you are spending good money to learn!!
    • For those interested in other equestrian activities - we have a range of books and "Handy Cards" and also click for E-mail Coaching

! A Wagstaffe family thanks to those that sent letters of condolences - !
    • Thanks to those that sent letters and cards to all the family they were appreciated.
    • Unless one has suffered the debilitating loss of a child it is difficult to feel the pain and many see the off had attitude as being ungrateful - Not so there are people and there again there are people
    • Many have known Nichola since she was born some of those responded with letters reminding us of events we had forgotten and we say thanks for them remembering those yesterdays in our time of need - Others walked to the other side probably not knowing what to say - they will eventually find the courage
    • Others sent seeing it their duty, they were rebuffed as they had rebuffed Nichola in her life's endeavours
    • In any difficult time or crisis there is always one person that stands out one Organisation that gives all for no reward we say thanks to two - Brian Holmes (Fellow Welsh man from Swansea) and his organisation Racing Welfare Lambourn Office under President The Princess Royal who leapt into action Immediately and continues to support and to Millie Scott (who Nichola played 4 goal at Beaufort 2003) of the HPA who on knowing of our plight offered all they could to assist
    • Honesty is a gift rare in our modern world but still exists in some company we wish to remember
    • To all those who supported us we say thanks - To those who wanted to but felt embarrassed thanks
    • To be reminded of the mousetrap and pigs and to receive the card with such a wonderful work of art and appropriate explanation thought and belief is friendship to behold - Thanks to you both
    • For my friend from Faslane thanks for remembering us at this time and for your card- please send your address and telephone number would love to talk to you again
    • Over 250 attended the funeral at Lambourn equestrians from all disciplines, directors and coaches from the British Racing School where was a Student, directors of Inglesham Polo club, polo patrons, polo coaches, players, racing lads and asses, racing horse owners, trainers, and officials and so on all to say their goodbyes to a friend - some only having known her for weeks days and months such was her -
    • In Scotland many turned out to say their goodbyes - Gail Rogan and family, Jackie McShane and family, Henry Hill and Family and Billy Stewart and his team taking time out from the days business and Showjuming competition to support us in our grief. Countless local riders riding club chair and members that Nichola had competed with joined the congregation. Teachers from schools Nichola had attended when severn, and polo player rushed from the Fairwell tournament at Perth to pay their respects, took time out to be with us and we thank them and all that made the evening special. The Rev Mrs Sheila Spence explained to me it was the first time she had taken a service for a teenager in all her years in the church - made even more difficult having known Nichola since the age of 18 months

Nichola was a member of Lanark and Upperward Ponyclub, shared editor, author and inspiration of this site.
As a ponyclub member for 12 years, she competed for her club in all equestrian sports including Polo, playing both for her club and Scotland. After completing her standard grades and highers, she worked for three years at Inglesham Polo centre, with talented internationals from all over the world, learning Spanish to be able to converse with the Argentinean Grooms and players. She transferred her interest and determination to racing and following training at the British School of Racing Newmarket; where she was head girl in her course, she settled in Lambourne the heart of racing in Wiltshire.
At 1920hrs on Monday evening 30th August, just 30 days after her 19th birthday, Nichola was riding her bicycle out of Neardown Racing Stables Upper Lambourne with friend John, on her way to continue training her own string of former racehorses.

Nichola was struck by a car, suffered extreme injury, and killed out right.
The feeling of loss felt by us her family, those friends, trainers, owners, jockeys and polo players is immense.

As her family we can only thank her for all our yesterdays, the enjoyment of being her friend, being fortunate to see her jump in competitions from Aberdeen to Truro, groom for and play polo with some of the top internationals in the world, and we regret beyond belief, being cheated out of her tomorrows by James Bobbin of London driving his Porsche on a bank holiday, through Upper Lambourne on a family visit.

We thank the Scottish Daily Express, the Scottish Daily Mail, the Racing Post and Radio Clyde for their recognition of Nichola's talents taking time out to print photos and accounts of Nichola's gifts to the Equestrian world, the Racing Welfare Organisation under their president The Princess Royal, for their immediate and continuing support, and the Thames Valley Police for all their assistance in the ongoing enquires.

    • We welcome all our visitors, as editor I take care to report the facts as known at that time. However events do change as time moves on, but those that have happened cannot be ignored because it suits certain parties. The events reported are investigated for new facts, clarity and change, when none are forthcoming the report remains.
    • We are open to ideas and critisism but are always upset when sniped at by those that will not accept the truth.
    • I am fortunate to have worked in parts of the world with multi lingual, multi discipline and catholic (adj) society, where honesty is a far greater currency than cash. If we've got it wrong -> scot.polo@btinternet.com
It takes a big person to be honest and objective, a lesser person hides and makes capital in sniping from afar.

    • Welcome all you guys from Salsburgh. Thanks for your visit. We look forward to seeing you again when you come to learn to ride and maybe play polo

! 60 Year Celebration of the D day Landings in France ! Its The Scottish Pony Club Polo Website
    • What can one say - thanks seems such an understatement albeit so sincere - for all those soldiers that gave us all our tomorrow a place we are and can talk about to grow old as we please with families and friends.
    • Seeing those survivors at 80 & 90 year old marching with such pride, interacting so positively with the younger soldiers, and talking of their achievements with pride but playing them down as though an every day occurrence, describing unity against tynary.
    • What would have happened had we lost - indeed whilst we won The World War did we actually win sufficiently to avoid future covetous by world powers? - Lets hope so for all our sakes.
    • I remember the effects of the war the bonfires in the streets for VE day for VJ day the excitement seeing families reunited the sadness of those that had lost family the ration books lack of sweets, bnread, eggs meat, milk and a host of other things.
    • Fortunately for our family my father was a gardener - already growing food even before the instruction came to plough land and plant, able to feed us and share with neighbours not quite as fortunate.
    • I can only say thanks to those that are alive from all the countries involved in Operation Over Lord and think of those that lost all, as I look at my family and grand family, growing old as they cannot
    • - Thanks from The Scottish Polo Team and in particular the editor - one with a long memory and ever so great full

! Polo in Scotland - Club Round Up !
    • Scottish Polo in the North where John Crawford of Hayfield Riding & Polo Club who started to play in 1992, continues to enthuse Ponyclub and University players arranging training rallies and chukkas at their Complex in Aberdeen. His son Chris him self from ponyclub polo now playing professionally returns regularly to help in the centres work, joining up with Vet Jim Dukes at Arboyn organising pony club polo rallies and training.
    • We understand Perth & Dundee have become even more selective. Now limiting club chukkas and matches to members and those having achieved -1 handicap leaving those would be players to find alternative places of play. Fortunately The Drummond Morray Training centre at Blare is more than is filling this need providing training and pony facilities for all ages.
    • Polo in Edinburgh continues to grow with Lord and Lady Morton together with their Son Jamie and daughter in-law Anne Douglas enthusing and welcoming university and young players eager to learn the game. The club are home of Edinburgh University and with their all year grass and arena facilities are encouraging many teams from the south to tournaments that can only improve the development of Scottish Polo at all levels.
    • There is good news for those in the West of Scotland as we have a new club formed by Karina Bowlby herself an acomplished polo player at Edinburgh and from a racing family determined to put something back into the sport. The club is now open with a few ponies and some good facilities and Argentinean coaches well worth a visit being only 10 miles from Glasgow
    • Ponyclub polo has a new Co-ordinator Katie Coward taking over from Sue Stirling-Aird and approved by David Cowley chair of Ponyclub UK. The same Polo format and ethos as that started by Perth & Dundee in 1992 continues, but has become even more introverted with edicts from Area Reps insisting that clubs with few players have to submit names to the committee for possible playing places. Whether it will be good for young folks Polo in Scotland remains to be seen
    • At Scot-polo we continue to enthuse local youngsters distributing books on various disciplines. The aim is to assist the would be players in the rules of each discipline with exercises that can be carried out safely at home and thereby improve their achievements at training sessions

      ! Polo Rules Training !
Seasoned and young players get trained as a C umpire. It helps you play safely and polo in general. Don't be satisfied with less - All ponyclub chukkas and game must be umpired with a C grade umpire
Arthur Douglas Nugent, HPA Chief Umpire will be delighted to hear from you
Remember - "The better the Umpire the better the game" - & Scotland needs you

    ! Faking it at Polo 2004? !
    • Did you watch the programme.
Oh I forgot to say I spent quite some time during the making if the series and played some great chukkas with Malcolm.
    • One of the ponies he rode was Ju Ju a great Argy Pony that helped Lanark and Upperward win the Lorriner Shield at Tidworth and the Rendel Shield at Cirencester.
    • Oh & by the way I'm co author of the book with Mum & Dad a coach and like me a Grade C umpire and having Show-jumped from Aberdeen to Truro why not take a look and do come and play - you won't regret it!!
    Take care now Chukka!!! Nichola

    ! Polo your sport for 2004? !
    • Did you watch the programme 'Faking It' when a courier from Manchester took up the polo challenge at Beaufort and Inglesham Polo clubs to try and fool some experts.
    • Impressed with his programme? Knowing Clare Tomlinson Casper Rodie Williams and team I wasn't surprised that he made it.
    • Would you like to learn - 'Riders or not' - not to worry we have the skills coaches riding instructors the ponies and all the equipment.
    • Pony-clubs Riding-clubs Hackers out Show-jumpers Dressage Eventers come and try a new sport that employs all the pony aids and speeds every few seconds. A great and welcome change for pony and rider and a new set of people to meet. Remember the programme didn't the Cartier Look great

    ! Polo for Pony-clubs in 2004 !
    • Remember every one can play polo and all ponyclubs can enter teams as long as you have two players from your own club. Get your DC to appoint a branch manager and then he or she will be sent all the information from HQ. It is a great sport and if you have just finished games then what are you waiting for. If you need help or advice then just Holler!!
    • Haven't got enough members to make a team but want to play any way, then not to worry. Every member can contact their Dc or Sam (Polo Secretary) at HQ and ask to have their names put on the list of available players for what ever group you wish to pla in. Groups run in age from 6 Jorrocks to 21 Gannon, Langford, or Rendel and every age is catered for. Play on your games pony showjumper or eveventer no worries. Don't be left out and don't listen to those saying you have to attend things in Scotland to be eligible it just not true!!. Take a look at the Whats-On page for playing groups
    • Arena Tournaments are held in April normally at Inglesham Polo Centre Near Swindon. A great place to meet lots of like minded folk from the south in good polo surroundings. Training is being arranged both in Scotland and England the nearest is Yorkshire where a great Coach Guy Verdon will be on hand at Beverly polo club for some excellent tuition. Dundee & Perth Polo Club arrange traing at their grounds at Scone palace Perth and also at Devon Liesure Alloa

! Young Player Grade C Umpire status !
    • Congratulations to:-
Tim Bromley-Martin, Kirtlinton Polo Club on achieving Grade C umpire Status in 2003.
Nichola MacDonald-Wagstaffe, Inglesham Polo Club granted her Grade C Status aged 16 in 2001.
    • Nichola is probably the youngest player in Scotland to pass the exam and be awarded the HPA
      C Grade Umpire qualification.

    • Lets see more Scottish young players taking this quite stringent exam as it can only improve the standard of play, and young players understanding of the rules.

    • It would do no harm for some of the old lags to update thir umpire knowledge and status by way of exam!!.
    • !! Remember only official Grade C umpires are allowed to officiate at Pony-club Chukkas !!

! Pony Club Polo in Scotland !
Lanark and Upperward team wish to convey their thanks to their DC Jenny Rae for making it possible for the team to compete in 2003 having been sadly left out in 2002 by the miss-understanding as revealed above.
  • To Roddie Williams managing Director of Inglesham Polo Club for his generous sponsorship of the team and coaching encouragement throughout the whole of the tournament in 2001 and again in 2003. This unselfish attitude is prevalent on the English polo scene.

  • ! 2003 into 2004 HPA handicap Changes !
Great to see Andrew Drummond-Morray, Ben and Margaret Coward uplifted to -1 and Tim Bromley-Martin lifted to 0 and having achieved a C grade umpire qualification. He joins Pony-club member Nichola MacDonald-Wagstaffe a member of Inglesham Polo Club who was granted her C grade at the age of 16 two years ago. Chris Crawford a previous pony-club player of Hayfield Polo and Riding club achieved his C grade last year and is well on the way to becoming the first Qualified Polo Coach in Scotland. Well done to you all

! 1963 Can you remember where you were when Kennedy was shot?? !Its The Scottish Pony Club Polo Website
Forty years later, the world still seeks answers in the assassination of John F. Kennedy, 36th president of the United States. It's a long time ago yet I remember vividly where I was and what I was doing; Differential Equations in a maths lesson , when the news came to us all. ''Kennedy has been gunned down in a motor-cade" Few reading this today will remember the happening.
The feeling of disbelief upset anger betrayal is still with me and the same feelings as I had when I heard the news; whilst travelling to Perth to play Pony-club Polo with my children; that Dianna Princess of Wales & Dodie Al Fiad have been assonated. Where will it all end?? Mans inhumanity to fellow man for what Gain? Profit or just greed and spite?

Nope' can't hang around election to fight-What was that? Of course give the power back to the people I've better things to do. Amazing how the priority changed when the seat becomes hotter and the blame may have to be shouldered. Blair; laying the retreat plan, in hospital with palpitations!!! meanwhile Bush afraid he may miss yet another gravy train!! Reverses the plan for Iraq quick chaps all come home in 6 or else!!!!

    ! 2003 11th Hour-11th Day-11th Month I Remember Thanks !
Our meeting was adjourned today at 1055hrs and then it dawned upon me. My troubles were nothing when compared to those that had given all for me to be able to write here. War is the enjoyment of leaders and is to the determent of those in our service personnel that unselfishly do their duty and pay with their lives so that we may enjoy our all. Words can never explain my feelings of gratitude to all those that have fallen to make my world a safer place
    ! 2003 Woman s Hour Monday 10th November !
The age of female consent for sex should be reduced from 16 to 12 cause Fellows may need to be prosecuted if the are caught impregnating 15 year olds. I have never heard so much trot in all my puff. Why can't we teach males to keep it in their trousers and expect the laws and a woman's rights? Oh by the way I'm a guy

! 2003 Do Huntly & Carr get a kick out of suspense regarding Holly & Jessica !
Easy to tell lies Photo © BBC Wales IT TAKES A VERY BIG PERSON TO TELL THE TRUTH but they Aren't??
Hey people it's time to be sad yet we will never understand the feeling of forlornness felt by the parents of Holly & Jessica. How they must be saying 'if only'!! I*** Time for us all to ask what makes some one engineer the destruction of young lives. "Please don't punish me it wasn't me honestly any way you can't prove it so there!!" Even one of the Police Accused of down loading images of your girls, whatever next. We criticise other countries re their dealings with paedophiles yet in this country we are considering passing laws to blame the offended for being there to be picked on!!

    ! Ponyclub Polo Championships !
    • Four Scottish pony-clubs enjoyed the competition in the Ponyclub Polo summer tournaments that culminate in the Cowdray weekend. The Orkney team comprised Ben and Margaret Cowan, (Orkney Area1) Raef Anderson, (Buccleuch Hunt Area 19) Andrew Drummond Murray (Strathearn Area 1).
The Lanark & Upperward team included Nichola and Mark MacDonald-Wagstaffe (L&U Area 19) Max Agar (Taunton Vale) Nicholas Clague, (Devon &Somerset). The Orkney team having played together in previous tournaments played well and qualified for Cowdray gaining second in the Rendell 11 competition.
However L&U played some splendid polo and during the three qualifying tournaments at Southam, Cirencester, and Tidworth. As a team they were developing well and their last chukka at Tidworth against Ashton Valley although lost by one goal saw some impressive play. A credit to the team having only met minuets before the first chukka at Southam and more especially since both Nicholas and Max only started playing in May 2003.
Perhaps in future years more pony-clubs will become
